England mens team could learn something watching the womens. They pass the ball better than the men.

Thought we had a great squad in 98 World Cup as well, real shame about that Argie game as it would have been interesting had we got past them.

Le Tiss should have gone though, travesty was that.

Roony should come from behind. Ideally an old brass.

Kane & Vardy pretty much played the loan striker role respectively at Spurs & Leicester so it might be more beneficial to start with one of them with the other to come on if needed.

I was surprised to hear last night that it was the first time Rooney Kane & Vardy have played together.
So after 2 years of buildup Hodgson is trying Plan A in the LAST pweparwation game?

As John and Yoko (nearly) wrote, England are the West Ham of the world.

Re: England v Portugal
the main strengths of our game is getting the ball out wide and quality crosses to forwards with the ability to get on the end of it , its the way we play , go right back to the near post cross that won the world cup in 66 , if we try being clever and outplay sides through midfield we are fucked .

Re: England v Portugal
But instead of Rooney playing behind Kane plus Vardy, he played centrally and kane/vardy played on the wing in a front three.

was bollocks really.

Re: England v Portugal
Well you say Hodgson cannot see it but last night was the first time that Rooney, Kane and Vardy had lined up together.

So let's wait and see.

Leicester had some of the best midfield talent in the country (Mahrez, Kante, Drinkwater). So did spurs. Even we have Payet!

They could control a game, complete passes, and were creative (Mahrez, Payet and Ali/Demeble).. Where are those in the English squad? Wilshere is the only one really. Lalana, Henderson?? really?

My point is that England managers pick the big players from the big teams but those players are generally not central to how their club plays. They are not the engine or spine of the teams they are picked from.

It would be better to pick english players who are instrumental to how their clubs play. Especially in the midfield positions.

We would probably do better picking the Bournemouth midfield than the one we have at present!

it's not his fault but rooney's presence unbalances not only the midfield but also the forward line. shame hodgson can't see it

What's with all this 'form players' nonsense.....it's like fucking championship manager on here. Flavour of the month cunts.

Agreed deal.

We need to take a look at Wales, for examples of how team spirit and togetherness but also playing to their own strengths and getting results.

Roy doesn't know what our strengths are. We don't have an identity or certain style of play.

Threesixty.

So basically you are saying we just keep playing as we are despite us not being good enough to win playing the way we are?

I have to disagree. Many tournaments/cups won by playing to your teams strengths rather than others. Look at Greece in this very tournament in 04. Christ you only have to look at this years premier league to see the benefits of playing to what suits you best. We will never be technically as good as the top countries like Spain and Germany so why keep continuing down the same path? Realistically we are good enough for quarter finals max the way we are set up right now.

I think another manager can come in and get alot more out of these players.

We have to play like on the continent because you cant win tournaments any other way.

I think the 1966 team was actually a skilled footballing team on par with other like Brazil etc.. at the time. It's since the mid 70's that our national team has departed from the normal way every other team on earth plays football.

it just doesnt work against proper football teams.

,
he's a scapegoat because if the midfield was doing its job we wouldnt be so worried about whatever striking pair is up there.

Think about it this way. Rooney has had the same devisive affect for Man U. But the reason Man U were shit this season is because of a crap midfield and sidewise passing. Attacking Rooney just takes away from the real issues the team has.

And kane/Vardy are not going to get goals without a proper functioning midfield. Both of their club teams has the best midfields in the country this season which is why they scored so many goals. Englands midfield is shit.

That is the problem. Why are we always trying to play like the continentals? Like you said we just dont have the players to play that role so why try? What we do have though is tenacity and pace in abundance. Keep it tight, Surrender possession and grab teams on the break. We would be better.

, 6:33 Fri Jun 3
Re: England v Portugal
Rooney is not a scapegoat at all. It is just that we have two better strikers and better midfielders than him. We hope that Hodgson sees this and uses his form players in the positions they have shown that form.

threesixty 6:24 Fri Jun 3
Re: England v Portugal
from what I've seen it's the same type of england teams we've had in the past. Great individual strikers, pretty good defenders and a shit midfield that cant control a game or dictate play in anyway.

So we'll get out of the group through the individual prowess of some players and then get to a team that has a proper midfield and get slaughtered.

I can now see why Woy is deperate for Wilshire to play. He seems like the only english player that play the midfield role properly like they do on the continent. We just kick and run and are not patient and cant build properly from midfield. We will get found out as usual..

And Rooney is just the new scapegoat, before it was Becks. There are 11 players on the pitch. 1 player does not make a team great or shit. It's just a lazy blame game.
